Sunday morning, Oct. 13, Athol Barnes, member of GPBC missions evangelism team and a leader in the international call2all mission organization, invited the congregation to watch the call2all promotional video as an introduction to his sermon and to help them focus on global missions.

He also spread a huge map of the countries and people groups of the world on one side of the sanctuary to help mem-bers actually visualize and walk on the images of each country.

Athol introduced himself, "As many of you know, my dear wife Debbie and I are from South Africa, and we have lived in America for the last 13.5 years. In many respects, we are God’s missionaries from Africa!"

Barnes continued, "Missions, as we com-monly call it, is the coming together of God’s mission and the nature of man — Man getting caught up in the redemptive current of God (John 3:16). Missions, is the conscious effort by the church, the body of Christ, to proclaim the Gospel where it has not been heard, or where it is inadequately known. Missions is not a department of the church, but rather it is the church itself.

Barnes quoted Dr. Emil Brunner, Swiss theologist, who said; "

The church exists by mission, just as fire exists by burning. Where there is no mission, there is no church; and where there is neither Church nor mission, there is no faith or belief in God."

This global mission is to fulfill The Great Commission.

The Great Commission, as found in Matthew 28:18-20, in some modern translations uses the verb phrase "make disciples." It is widely misunderstood that this is referring to the ongoing educa-tion and discipling process of recent converts. However this should rather read "WIN disciples" so that Jesus was referring to the fact that at conversion a person instantly becomes a disciple. "As we see in Acts 14:21, where the same verb phrase is used, but translated to "win disciples."

The Great Commission goes on in verse 20, as Jesus says "teaching them to obey everything I have com-manded you."

Thus the disciples were to teach these new disci-ples, that they in turn should be fishers of men, just as they were —winning new disciples as they went. "This is so important, one of the first things that a new believer should be taught to do, is to reach out and share the good news with someone else. But how can we disciple someone to do something that we are not doing ourselves?" Barnes asked.

Many people believe in the Great Commission, too few people obey the Great commission.

There are 12,862 people groups in the world, 2161 of them have little or no access to the Gospel.

In China, there are 1.3 billion people, conservative estimates have 150 million Christians, but some say there could be as many as 300 million. That means that there could be more Christians in China than there are people in America!

But what about our own mission field, this great nation that used to be the heartbeat of missions to the world, and which is now one of the biggest receiving nations for missionaries?

America is the nation with the third largest number of unbe-lievers; there are as many as 220 million unsaved people in America. This is our mission field.

Barnes continued, "But we are all called to be missionaries in our own sphere of influence. Missions and evangelism go hand in hand. I love the fact that our church theme verse has been Mat-thew 9:37-38. The harvest is plentiful. This is such an exciting time to be a Christian. You are missing out on a glorious experi-ence if you aren’t out there evangelizing."
